Arthroscopy
Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat disorders of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The TMJ is the joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull and allows important movements such as opening the mouth, chewing, and speaking. When problems occur within this joint, arthroscopy allows the surgeon to closely examine the internal structures of the joint and provide appropriate treatment with minimal tissue damage.
During the arthroscopy procedure, a small instrument called an arthroscope is inserted into the joint through a tiny incision near the ear. The arthroscope contains a small camera that allows the surgeon to view the inside of the joint on a monitor. This helps identify issues such as inflammation, joint damage, displaced discs, or scar tissue that may be causing pain or restricted movement. In addition to diagnosis, arthroscopy can also be used to perform minor surgical procedures inside the joint. The surgeon may remove inflamed tissue, reposition joint structures, or improve joint mobility during the same procedure. Because the incisions are very small, arthroscopy generally results in less discomfort and faster recovery compared to traditional open surgery. Arthroscopy is often recommended for patients who continue to experience TMJ pain, limited mouth opening, or joint dysfunction even after conservative treatments such as medication, splints, or physiotherapy. With modern surgical techniques and proper post-operative care, arthroscopy can significantly improve joint function and help patients regain comfortable jaw movement.
